Heater scarification of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavement rehabilitates deteriorated asphalt pavement surfaces to depths of 25 mm to 50 mm, thereby minimizing the use of additional materials. Ideal candidates for this process are pavements that have a stable and adequate base. Some of the advantages are that it is comparatively economical and less traffic control is needed using this method. Heater scarification aids raveled areas, reestablishes the cross slope, and asphalt content. The scarified HMA must be overlaid with a preventive maintenance treatment item prior to the end of the paving season.
