The current Standard Specification for Trench and Culvert Excavation includes payment for worker safety and protection. As the primary purpose for this item is to pay for excavation on a volume basis, the requirement for worker protection and safety results in a blended item that causes problems when quantities change on construction contracts. To correct this, the requirement for worker safety and protection will be removed from the payment for this item. The requirement is contained in the applicable parts of Section 107 which addresses worker protection and safety. Any protection or support systems which need to be installed in order to provide worker protection and safety will be paid for under another item.
The pay item for Trench and culvert excavation (O.G.) will be deleted, as this method of defining the top payment line will be clarified and included under the regular item for trench and culvert excavation.
